The Commerce Program at the Smith School of Business (SSB) has been ranked as one of the top undergraduate business programs in Canada for 2017. In addition to SSB students, QFAC attracts many passionate finance students from all the leading business schools across Canada. Each year we host delegates from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Schulich, Laurier, McGill, Rotman, HEC Montreal, Sauder, Dalhousie, as well as many others. This year, we are committed to expanding and diversifying our delegate base and hope to achieve a 50/50 internal (Queen’s Commerce) vs. external (other) delegate split, with representation from several Canadian & U.S. universities as well as Queen’s students from other faculties with a passion for finance.
To offer our corporate partners exposure to the brightest and most motivated students, we screen and select delegates on criteria similar to those used by our partners when evaluating summer and full-time recruits. Last year, 100 top business students were selected from a pool of over 300 applicants based on written applications and resume screens, gauging interest and knowledge of the financial services industry and ensuring that we select a diverse set of individuals who we are confident will add value to QFAC 2017. Approximately half of the delegates attending QFAC will be third-year students, along with a significant number of second-year students, sharing a common interest of pursuing careers (seeking summer or full-time positions) in the financial services industry. Further, QFAC remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment with representation from universities across North America, as well as promoting women in finance. Prospective delegates are encouraged to attend the QFAC Delegate Taster to learn more about the application process and ensure that your resume has been updated and reviewed as a QFAC Resume Book featuring all delegates will be shared with our corporate partners.
Taking place the first weekend of November, QFAC provides the ideal opportunity for delegates to interact with our corporate partners, expand their network, and gain valuable insights into the financial services industry leading up to first-round interviews and summer and full-time recruiting season. QFAC brings together exceptional students from across North America with a common passion for finance, providing delegates with an invaluable opportunity to learn from one another as well as industry leaders. Above all, QFAC acts as an important link between financial theories taught in the classroom and the industry-wide application of those concepts, providing a first-hand glance into a career in the financial services industry and facilitating the transition into summer and full-time roles.
The M&A simulation, Day on Bay excursions, industry workshops, speaker panels, networking sessions, and socials planned for QFAC 2017 will ensure that delegates have an unforgettable experience that closes the gap between the classroom and the financial services industry. QFAC brings together exceptional students and industry leaders, allowing delegates to form valuable connections and learn more about the variety of opportunities available. Delegates can experience “a day in the life” of an investment banker, an equity trader, a private equity investor and many others by visiting the Toronto offices of several top financial institutions during the Day on Bay excursions and speaking with company representatives at our sponsored dinners. Delegates will also be challenged to hone their stock picking and financial modeling skills with our newly revamped M&A simulation and will gain valuable insights from our keynote speakers. Further, delegates can tailor their experiences at QFAC to the areas of the financial services industry that are of greatest interest to them and take advantage of this opportunity to ask questions, build valuable connections, and showcase their learning beyond the classroom.
Given QFAC’s wide array of prestigious sponsors and networking-oriented events, the conference offered me an unparalleled experience to have meaningful interactions with firms I was recruiting with. QFAC gave me the opportunity to stand out during the recruiting process through showing my keen interest in financial markets and fit within firm culture. While there is an established recruiting process for corporates to select students, it was through my connections at the conference that I was able to identify which firms best aligned with my needs and interests. As a third year student, QFAC directly helped me secure a competitive summer internship and begin my career in the financial industry.
QFAC has proven to be an incredible learning opportunity. Over the past two years, I have been fortunate to attend the conference, and in both instances, I was not disappointed. From diverse speakers to engaging events, this conference has plenty to offer. Whether you are simply curious and looking to explore the finance industry, or focused on securing a summer placement with an elite employer, attending QFAC will help you reach your goals.
As a delegate at QFAC, I had the opportunity to gain additional exposure to the financial services industry. At the conference, I developed a deeper understanding through participating in workshops, listening to industry speakers, and visiting firms in the city. Through meeting and socializing with sponsors and speakers, I have been able to further expand and strengthen my professional network. QFAC offers a multitude of opportunities that extend outside of the conference itself. I had the terrific opportunity to travel to New York City and compete in the annual QFAC Stock Pitch Competition hosted in tandem with Greentech Capital Advisors. These invaluable experiences have further solidified my desire to pursue a career in the financial services industry.
Being a delegate for QFAC provided me with a unique experience to explore the vast opportunities within finance. Exposure to influential leaders in the industry is unparalleled, there is plenty of opportunity to forge true connections with firm representatives, and the educational component is relevant and interesting. I found the market insights from financial professionals I met at the conference to be especially valuable. QFAC effectively bridges the gap between the finance industry and the undergraduate finance community, making it an event that I would urge anyone interested in finance to attend!
As a delegate, I found that QFAC provided incredible exposure to the finance industry. I was able to hear from seasoned professionals across various streams of finance and connect with many sponsors and reps from top firms in Toronto. The many opportunities to interact with companies outside of formal networking sessions allowed me to make meaningful connections with recruiters, which I found to be extremely valuable. The M&A deal competition, office tours, and speaker panels were all unique learning opportunities that contributed to an amazing delegate experience.
I was fortunate to attend QFAC in 2015 & 2016 to experience the informative networking sessions, eye-opening office tours, and energetic social gatherings. There is no other conference at Queen’s that offers such a dense schedule of practical events to further the progression of a career in the finance industry. The company representatives that I met and the sessions I attended at QFAC guided me to have the knowhow and fundamental foundation to excel during the recruiting season. I could not recommend a better conference for anyone looking to break into the finance industry.
