The Commerce Program at the Smith School of Business (QSB) has been ranked as one of the top undergraduate business programs in Canada for 2017. In addition to QSB students, QFAC attracts many passionate finance students from all the leading business schools across Canada. Each year we host delegates from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Schulich, Laurier, McGill, Rotman, HEC Montreal, Sauder, Dalhousie, as well as many others.
To offer our corporate partners exposure to the brightest and most motivated students, we screen and select delegates on criteria similar to those used by our partners when evaluating summer and full-time recruits. Most importantly, we want to ensure that all delegates at QFAC have a strong interest in pursuing a future career in finance. Additionally, prior to the conference, we provide our partners with a resume book featuring all of the delegates.
Last year, 100 top business students were selected from a pool of over 300 appliciants. Approximately half of the delegates attending QFAC will be third-year students along with a significant number of second-year students. The majority of delegates will therefore be in a position to potentially contribute to our partners as summer or full-time recruits.
As a delegate for QFAC for the past two years, I have been fortunate to experience some incredible exposure to the finance industry. In first year, QFAC provided me the opportunity to learn about the various areas of finance and really helped me discover my career aspirations. This past year, I was able to meet many sponsors and company reps and connect with them. QFAC offers opportunities to connect with professionals beyond the formal networking sessions, which is truly an irreplaceable experience.
Attending QFAC 2014 gave me the opportunity to network with many professionals with various backgrounds and provided me with a better understanding of the finance industry. I was able to learn about specific areas of finance through workshops, simulation and office visits, giving me a thorough understanding of the opportunities available in finance. Prior to the conference, I was uncertain about entering the finance stream. After attending QFAC 2014, I am certain that the finance industry best suits my career goals and aspirations.
My time on QFAC was invaluable. Being on the executive for three years helped me develop strong relationships with peers and gain a stronger sense of leadership and teamwork. From a delegate’s perspective, the conference offers a wide breadth of events to suit any level of prior finance knowledge. The workshops, simulation, networking events can help a first or second year better understand the various roles that exist within the industry. For a third or fourth year student, QFAC can directly allow you to take the next step in your career by finding a job through contacts made at the conference. I would recommend QFAC to anyone interested in Finance.
As an executive on QFAC for three years, I got to see the conference first-hand on a number of occasions. Over this time, I was able to witness the incredible engagement between delegates and the conference’s sponsors. These formative contacts proved to be extremely useful for me as I went through the summer internship recruiting process. I was able to meet representatives from a range of financial firms which interested me, and I was able to learn a great deal about many industries. I would highly recommend any students interested in pursuing a career in the finance industry to attend QFAC!
Attending QFAC in the fall of 2014 was an unparalleled experience. QFAC offers an engaging experience that is ideal for an undergraduate student as it extends learning outside of the classroom setting. The networking sessions provided a great opportunity to connect with industry professionals who shared fantastic insight into what it’s like to work in finance. For me, I had a great opportunity to interview with a firm who I had connected with at QFAC and was fortunate enough to land a competitive summer placement. QFAC really opened the doors necessary for me to pursue a career in finance and with that I couldn’t be more pleased with the experience.
